Getting the Most out of Assessment Centres
Assessment centres (ACs) are a popular method used in organisations throughout the world to assist in employee selection and promotion decisions. ACs represent what is probably the richest source of information on employee behaviour because ACs expose participants to multiple work-related simulations. They also require that participants are rated by trained, external subject matter experts. In this presentation, ACs are explored with respect to how they can help to guide organisations when making employment decisions. We will delve into the research literature on ACs and will pick up on recommendations that have been identified about how ACs can be improved to more reliably capture the behavioural responses of candidates. We will look at the case study of Cornerstone Consulting in Pittsburgh USA, which is using the research literature to help to guide their application of novel methods of scoring ACs with the aim of maximising their reliability and effectiveness.
Dr Duncan Jackson
Dr Duncan Jackson is a faculty member of the Department of Organizational Psychology, Birkbeck, the University of London. He has published in some of the leading journals in the discipline, including the Journal of Applied Psychology, the Journal of Occupational and Organizational Psychology, Personnel Psychology, Human Performance, and the International Journal of Selection and Assessment. Duncan’s research is primarily concerned with multifaceted assessment in the organisational context. He also has an interest in applications of generalizability theory as a comprehensive perspective on measurement reliability. At Birkbeck, Duncan teaches Selection and Assessment and Research Methods. He is the Programme Director for the International Programme, which offers University of London, British Psychological Society (BPS)-accredited Master’s-level courses internationally. Duncan has taught in and consulted to organisations in New Zealand, South Korea, and the United Kingdom.
