Speaker 1: Dr Majeed Khader

Dr Majeed Khader (Senior Consultant Psychologist, Director HTBSC, Ministry of Home Affairs)

With 24 years of applied experience as a forensic and criminal psychologist, Dr A Majeed Khader is Chief Psychologist of the Ministry of Home Affairs and the Singapore Police Force. He was previously deputy commander of the police crisis negotiation unit and now serves as Senior Mentor. Majeed holds a Masters degree (with Distinction) in Forensic Psychology from Leicester University (U.K) and a PhD in Psychology, (specialising in crisis and personality) from Aberdeen University, Scotland. He has overseen the development of psychological services in the areas of resilience, personnel selection, leadership, crisis negotiations, profiling, and crisis psychology in law enforcement settings. For his work in the psychology of terrorism, he was awarded the National Day Award (Bronze) in 2006 and NDA (Silver Award) in 2015 by the President of Singapore. Dr Majeed is presently an Assistant Professor (Adjunct) at the Nanyang Technological University where he teaches criminal psychology. He is presently Asian Director for the Society of Police and Criminal Psychology (USA), and a member of the Singapore Psychological Society, American Psychological Association and the British Psychological Society. He continues to publish actively, and his recently released book  “Combating Violent Extremism and Radicalization in the Digital Era” was published by IGI Global Publications.

Title: Terrorism Psychology and You 

This talk discusses the topic of terrorism and how the psychological sciences has informed the understanding of terrorism.  It also discusses the psychological and societal impact of a terror attack in Singapore and the role that psychologists can play in the event of an attack.

Speaker 2: Edgar K Tham

Edgar Tham (Founder & Chief Sport & Performance Psychologist, SportPsych Consulting and Performance Leadership) 

Associate Faculty (Psychology & Sports/PE programmes), SIM University

Co-author, Mental Toughness Strategies of the World’s Greatest Athletes (2010)

Edgar is Singapore’s pioneer Sport & Performance Psychologist; he has worked with more than 40 different performance domains from the schools to world championship levels since 1993. He was employed by the Singapore Government as its very first local sport psychologist in 1995. Edgar was the founding Head of the Sport Psychology Unit of the Singapore Sports Council in 1996. He was team consultant and traveling psychologist to numerous national teams preparing for the SEA Games, Asian Youth Games, Asian Games, Commonwealth Games, Youth Olympic Games, Olympic Games, Paralympic Games, World Championships, and ASEAN Armies Rifle Meets since 1993. Currently, he is the Chief Sport & Performance Psychologist of SportPsych Consulting (private practice) and Performance Leadership (HRD consultancy),  and is an Associate Faculty member in the Psychology and Sports/PE programmes at SIM University. As a Registered Psychologist (since 2002) with the Singapore Psychological Society, Edgar is listed in the International Who’s Who of Professionals (2000) for his specialized work in peak performance psychology. He is the lead co-author of the following publications, among others:

  • Mental Toughness Strategies of the World’s Greatest Athletes, with Dr Daniel A. Weigand, Health Sciences Academy, USA, August 2010
  • World Sport Psychology Sourcebook, 3rd Edition (Chapter Contributor; Sport Psychology in Singapore), with Dr Teh Kong Chuan, Fitness Information Technology, USA, Dec 2001

Edgar holds black belts in both Aikido and Taekwondo, and was a national champion in canoeing (National Schools A Division) and dragon boat racing (National Men’s Open). 

Title: The Winning Mindset: Mental Toughness Strategies of Olympic Champions & Elite Performers

This talk will reveal the “new” psychological construct of mental toughness and its relationship with elite sporting performance. It will also discuss its relevance and practical applicability to other domains (e.g., education, military, workplace) supported by recent research.
