Synopsis
As supervisors guiding the next generation of practitioners, it is crucial to understand not just why young people may present with violent risks, but also the psychological processes that drive them, and the ethical considerations and practical steps professionals can take when such concerns arise in the course of their clinical work. Youth violence and other emerging threats remain pressing concerns globally and in Singapore. While cases are rare, the consequences of missing early warning signs can be devastating.

This session will cover:

  • The psychology of youth violence and other emerging issues —risk factors, vulnerabilities, and pathways.
  • Tell-tale signs that distinguish ordinary adolescent turbulence from deeper ideological entrenchment.
  • Practical guidance on when to reporta concern, how to report through the proper channels, and what to expect once a report is made.
  • Discussion on ethical, legal and safety considerations when handling such cases
  • Drawing on case insights and frontline experience, the session will provide supervisors with the confidence to guide their supervisees in recognising, responding to, and reporting on violence, threats and risk concerns. Participants will leave with a sharper eye for early warning signals and a clearer ethical framework for decision-making—ensuring their work supports professional ethical responsibility, client care, and community safety.
