SUPERVISION WORKSHOP 1: Understanding Clinical Work and the Therapeutic Process
By Dr Yvonne Lek & Dr Liza Thia

This in person workshop series is designed for psychologists and senior practitioners seeking to strengthen their competencies in supervision across clinical, counselling and educational psychology settings. Grounded in the Singapore Register of Psychologists (SRP) Supervisor Competency Framework and contextualised for Singapore practice settings, a developmental approach to supervision is adopted from understanding the therapeutic work itself, to the supervisory relationship, and finally to the wider professional, ethical, and organisational context in which supervision occurs.

The workshop series, from clinical work (Workshop 1), to supervisory relationships (Workshop 2), combines practical experience, reflective learning and hands-on application grounded in real-world supervisory practice.  Participants will develop the ability to hold the “big picture” of supervision while attending to the multiple systems that influence effective clinical practice and professional development.

Synopsis: Effective supervision begins with a deep understanding of the therapeutic work being supervised. This in-person workshop focuses on the therapist-client system and explores how supervisors can help supervisees make sense of clinical information, formulate cases, develop interventions and navigate therapeutic relationships. Participants will examine multiple layers of clinical work, including client presentation, case formulation, intervention planning, the client-therapist relationship, and the therapist’s internal internal responses. Through case discussions, role plays and hands-on practice, participants will learn how to facilitate reflective clinical thinking and strengthen supervisees’ ability to work effectively with clients.

Learning Outcomes:
At the completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Apply a systematic framework for understanding and discussing clinical work in supervision.
  • Recognise and explore the impact of therapeutic relationships and therapist internal processes on clinical practice.
  • Use reflective supervisory approaches to support effective client care and professional growth.
  • Demonstrate practical supervision skills through experiential learning, case discussion and role-play practice.
  • Facilitate culturally responsive and reflective supervision relevant to Singapore’s multicultural and multidisciplinary practice contexts.
  • Apply the competencies outlined in the SRP Supervisor Competency Framework to supervision practice.
