TWO-DAY Competency-Based Supervision Workshop By MARK DONOVAN, PhD

Dates:             13 & 20 April 2026 (online delivery, 14 hours CPD)

 Synopsis:

This two-day Competency-Based Supervision Workshop provides participants with a comprehensive understanding of competency-based and reflective practice models of clinical supervision. This workshop builds knowledge and offers interactive application of supervisor competencies that are described in the *Singapore Register of Psychologists (SRP) Supervisor Competency Framework (SPS, 2024) and the **Psychology Board of Australia (2018) Guidelines for Supervisors:

  • Application of competency-based principles, reflective, and scientist-practitioner frameworks in supervisory practice
  • Establishment and maintenance of a safe and effective supervisory relationship, including management of ruptures
  • Management of boundaries and provision/seeking of feedback
  • Setting, assessing and evaluation of competency-based goals
  • Provision of clear and constructive feedback, including use of measures
  • Monitoring and addressing ethical dilemmas and challenges in supervision

Interactive exercises allow participants to practice the various materials covered, consistent with adult learning frameworks. Video and live demonstrations model best-practice in supervision.

Learning Outcomes:

At the completion of the workshop, participants will be able to:

  • Describe the foundational principles of effective reflective supervision within a competency-based approach
  • Demonstrate practical skills in areas including creating a safe supervisory relationship, setting, assessing and evaluating supervision goals, utilising reflective practice to enhance supervisee skills and values, providing and seeking feedback, and managing challenges and ethical dilemmas in supervision

 Trainer Background:

The workshop is led by Dr Mark Donovan, co-partner of the Reflective Supervision Team. With over 30 years’ experience as a registered clinical psychologist in Australia and the UK, Dr Donovan has worked across university and health service settings. He is a recognised presenter at both national and international conferences, with a strong publication record and extensive training experience. Since 2013, Dr Donovan has served as a Board-Approved trainer for the Australian Psychological Society, training supervisors both in-person and online, including in Singapore since 2017. His teaching style is highly interactive, incorporating practical discussions, real-world and diverse examples, live demonstrations, and opportunities for hands-on skills practice.

This workshop is open to SPS full members and non-SPS members who are practitioners of Psychology, Counselling, allied health and mental health practitioners working with mental-health issues, working in the community, healthcare, organizational and school settings. This workshop is suitable for those wanting to acquire, build, strengthen and / or seeking a refresher workshop on foundation / basic supervision knowledge and skills application.
