SPS members are a diverse group of individuals who have graduated from universities around the world. In general, accredited courses possess these key qualities.
- Choose programmes that are of a fair and appropriate duration (a Bachelor’s degree typically takes 3 to 4 years) with rigorous course syllabus that covers the breadth of psychology knowledge.
- Choose programmes with faculty members who are distinguished individuals in their respective fields, and hold postgraduate and above level of qualifications.
- Ensure that the overseas programme brought in by the school is an accredited programme from its country of origin, and has course syllabus which matches that of reputable programmes in Singapore, US, UK, or Australia.
For applicants with degrees conferred by overseas universities, you are required to request for the awarding University to send your original transcripts and academic records directly to SPS Secretariat. If your university is unable to offer this, please do get an email documenting that, and forward it to our Secretariat. Once this has been established, SPS accepts certified true copies of your educational transcripts and certificates by the school itself, a lawyer, a Notary Public, Justice of Peace, or Embassy. These can be submitted to the SPS Secretariat either as hard or soft copies.
Certified true copies are photocopies of the actual transcripts and certificates that have been certified as true by a recognised individual of standing in society or the institution that awarded them. If possible, make a request to the institute that awarded your transcript to certify the copies as true. You may also request for a lawyer, Notary Public, Justice of Peace, and Embassies to certify the copies as true. These can be submitted to the SPS Secretariat either as hard or soft copies.
Browse the Full member directory on our website or contact your local university’s psychological department. You may also have friends or colleagues who are already Full members of Singapore Psychological Society. Alternatively, you may wish to attend one of our social events or talks held by SPS, and network with our committee and members.
As you have been residing and working overseas, you may submit 2-3 Letters of Recommendation in place of the Character Referees, for our consideration. These should be from professional sources.
These processes have safeguarded SPS from past applicants who submitted fake degrees and transcripts. Please be rest assured that your application will be processed promptly, once all the documents have been received.
It takes an average of 4 to 12 weeks to process membership applications once they are received, assuming that all required documents are submitted by the applicant. Those with overseas qualifications may require a longer processing time. Click here for an overview of the application process.
Work experience in a psychological field includes work that encompasses the practice of psychology – be it research in a psychology-related field or direct client work with certain population groups.
Please note that Counselling is a separate field from Counselling Psychology. For Counselling Psychology, besides needing to demonstrate that psychological tools or methods are constantly used in the field of work, receiving supervision by a counselling psychologist is also essential.
To upgrade your membership category, you will need to complete the form for that category of membership you are applying for.
The application instructions and form can be found here. Please indicate that you would like to upgrade your current membership.
With regards to specific requirements of seeking employment in Singapore, you will have to contact each potential employer.
However, it is noted that employers and members of public are increasingly recognising the importance of receiving services from a Registered Psychologist.
Please contact us at secretariat@singaporepsychologicalsociety.org. Please include your full name, membership category, and last 4 digits of your NRIC number for verification, as well as the personal particulars that you would like to update.
The SPS seeks to ensure the service quality of practicing Psychologists through the Singapore Register of Psychologists (SRP), a self-regulatory system that promotes transparency, accountability, and professionalism for the services provided.
One of the requirements of SRP is that the applicant has to be a Full member of SPS. While the SRP is not a licensing board, the SRP membership shows that the member has reached a certain standard of training and experience, and is qualified to practise. These requirements are benchmarked and comparable to those of regulatory bodies in countries with a robust and modern psychology research and practice (e.g. US, UK, Australia).
Please view here for more details.
The practice of psychology is unfortunately not regulated by law in Singapore at this juncture. There is no mandatory professional licensing. SPS is is working with relevant stakeholders to work towards the regulation of Psychologists in Singapore.
